The test follows the procedure outlined in ASTM F2096, which details the process of detecting gross leaks in both porous and non-permeable packaging materials via internal pressurization.
The gross leak tester operates by creating a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the inspected sample, which is immersed in a water medium. If there is a leak, high-pressure gas will move to the low-pressure area through the leak point, causing bubbles to form in the water. The formation of these bubbles on the low-pressure side indicates the presence of a leak, thereby facilitating detection.
